Pharmacology exam day! OMG, I've studied a lot but I don't remember anything. I haven't studied many topics. I have no idea what to study. I don't feel like studying pharmacology. Why did they even create cephalosporins? Why should classification of drugs always be a nightmare? Why ya doin this to me pharmacology? WHY?
I can hear you cry deep inside, asking these questions to yourself and to your friends.
Now, wipe your tears, take a deep breath, pat yourself on your back. Don't worry, pharmacology ain't such a huge thing to worry about. It is just because the way other colleagues talk about it makes it look tough. It's not tough at all to be honest.
In this page, I'll be helping you by answering some of the commonly asked questions on how to study pharmacology.
Q) First, which book for pharmacology?
- If you're in India, your medical college would have probably suggested you to read KD Tripathi or Katzung.
You know what, for pharmacology, KD Tripathi is more than enough, not just to pass the exams, but also to have a good knowledge on the various drugs. First read KD Tripathi patiently. Don't worry about other books and what other people are reading. If you are planning for distinction, reading KD Tripathi alone thoroughly 4 or 5 times is more than sufficient. If you want a medal, go for Katzung, but KD Tripathi is must, from my point of view.
During my second year in med school, I studied pharmacology only from KD Tripathi, because my friends created a hype about Katzung, and kept saying that it is very difficult to read, which is actually IS NOT TRUE!
Q) What is the role of review books and MCQ books?
- They are obviously helpful for your exams as well as for your entrance exams, but only if you read them after completing your main textbook which is KD Tripathi.
Q) Hey, I frequently get doubts in pharmacology and I need some motivation to study. What should I do?
- Feel free to text me on instagram @medvidsmadesimple1 and ask me your doubts. I've survived pharmacology. So I obviously know some tips and tricks which can help you survive too ;)
Q) I want to approach some professors in my college to ask doubts. But I'm scared. What should I do?
- Well, remember, they're paid to teach you. You have all rights to ask doubts to them. But before approaching them, try hard to solve your doubts by yourself first. If you can't, then ask some of your colleagues in college. If still not solved, look for good professors in your college who are approachable and are enthusiastic in teaching students. Always be polite, don't show attitude to them. If they tell you that they're busy or something, just say no problem sir/ma'am politely and ask them if you can come later in their free time. That will impress them to be honest and they'll be happy to teach you later in their free time.
Q) Classification of drugs, how to study them?
- Step 1, don't panic
- Step 2, read the list slowly, don't try to memorize it completely at this point itself
- Step 3, write down this classification list on a paper, by looking at your textbook
- Step 4, now read the classification list written on your paper
- Step 5, close your eyes, try recollecting the list one by one. If you forget something, open your eyes and look at the classification in your textbook as well as your paper.
- Step 6, be confident. Tell yourself that you're almost 60% thorough.
- Step 7, read the list once again before going to bed
- Step 8, read the list once again after waking up the next day morning.
- Step 9, keep revising it in your mind, in your free time, if you feel like forgetting something, just go through it again
Fine, you're ready to go. Remember that forgetting stuff is something which is unavoidable, but something which you can overcome by fighting hard. Just follow my steps, make some modifications if you want, and there you go :)
These are some of the common doubts regarding pharmacology. Pharmacology is actually fun if you realize it. So don't panic, have fun reading pharmacology.
